The surfing comic strip “Wilbur Kookmeyer” was created by Bob Penuelas in 1986 as a two-page feature in Surfer Magazine. Between 1986 and 2000 a total of sixty different two-page episodes were published in the magazine.
In 2004, after a three year hiatus Wilbur brought back as a regular feature in the magazine. Now, in 2006, after a 20 year run, Wilbur Kookmeyer is saying a final farewell. The last episode will run in the August 2006 issue.
Over the years Wilbur has gained a sort of cult following in the surfing community and has become the unofficial mascot of the surfing subculture. He may be just a kooky, fictitious comic strip character, but Wilbur Kookmeyer has earned a place among the pantheon of surfing legends and heroes.
But not all is lost for hard-core Wilbur aficionados. Wilbur Kookmeyer’s name will continue on through his products, which can be found in better surfshops and right here at wilbur-kookmeyer.com.
Wilbur lives!
